Born and raised in China, Yucun started learning Chinese painting and calligraphy at a young age, first from well known court painters of the royal art tradition, then from other accomplished art masters of various styles. In addition to fine art, he also studied Chinese and western aesthetics, history and literature. This blend of training and studies in his formative years broadened his perspectives and helped develop his own unique style in his mature works.
While a master of traditional Chinese landscape painting, Yucun excels at portraits and still lives as well. His work is characterized by broad expressive strokes with vivid colors, depicting the general theme of the relationship between nature and human beings. Using traditional Chinese color pigments, he gives life to mountains, rivers, plants and flowers. The exploration of harmony between man and nature and its contribution to one’s inner peace has become a recurring theme in many of his works. What sets him further apart is his unique blend of technique by which he incorporates the western perspective into traditional Chinese painting, applying Chinese painting materials to produce an effect appealing to a wide international audience.
Yucun’s paintings and calligraphic works have been widely presented in private, corporate and public collections in China and around the world. He has won countless awards and prizes, including a gold prize for “Sunny Spot” from the National Calligraphy and Painting Invitational, first prize for “Fiery Mountains” from the State Calligraphy and Painting Exposition and first prize for “Dancing Mountains” from the Great Wall National Calligraphy Contest.
